West Wimmera Health Service is seeking a passionate Director of Nursing in a full time capacity at our Kaniva Hospital and residential aged care facilities.

Managing an acute ward, urgent care centre and two residential aged care facilities, which are home to 21 residents, the Director of Nursing will ensure the health care facility is running smoothly at all times. Your strong communication skills and diplomacy will enable you to lead the team and support residents and their families through the journey of residential care. 

Our Kaniva facility also offers allied health services, community nursing, and social support groups. You will be supported by a team of DONs and Executive Management based over our 10 campuses, throughout West Wimmera.

West Wimmera Health Service is a leading rural health service in Western Victoria which provides high-quality hospital care, residential aged care, disability services and community services to more than 16,000 people in the West Wimmera region. We employ close to 600 staff across nine campuses at Nhill, Kaniva, Jeparit, Rainbow, Goroke, Natimuk, Murtoa, Minyip and Rupanyup. The organisation has a total of 146 residential aged care beds, 54 acute beds, an operating theatre and a broad range of community health services are available from many of our campuses, keeping our community well at home.

Wimmera Region
Being in the middle of the Little Desert National Park and Big Desert Wilderness Park Kaniva offers some of the best spaces for four wheel driving, motor-bike riding, fishing, birdwatching, canoeing, skiing and other water sports, camping and bushwalking. It’s also a photographers and stargazers dream with wide open spaces, big clear skies and no light pollution. It also has the big windmill, large scale silo artwork, painted Sheep Art Trail throughout town and one of only a few puppet shops still operating in Australia. 

The nearby Mount Arapiles (famous for its rock climbing), Grampians National Park and Silo Art Trail all make for adventurous day trips. 

Located in far Western Victoria near the border to South Australia, Kaniva is surrounded by vast wheat fields, bright canola crops in the spring and sheep stations that have flourished here since the 1850s. The town was recently named recently named Australia’s most optimistic town because of its passionate locals, community spirit and business confidence with locals continuously working hard to improve the town in many ways. It is an increasingly popular tree change destination with young people making Kaniva their future, gaining employment, buying or creating businesses, buying and building homes and having families. 

Kaniva has many thriving shops, cafes and businesses with a large proportion of employment and business opportunities in agriculture, sheep and grain farming but also plenty of positions in trades, retail, health, education and local government. The main street is colourful and alive with refurbished shopfronts and restored hotels, one being recently featuring on the Selling Houses Australia TV show. 

People travel from surrounding towns to visit the nature playground and walking track around the wetlands and fauna park where you can view emus, kangaroos, wallabies, deer, peacocks, cockatoos, parrots and rosellas. A highlight near the work place is Billyho Bush Walk, a self-guided and signposted bushwalk which is about 3 km return in length. The walk passes through areas of yellow gums, brown stringy barks, banksias and heaths. Birdlife includes southern scrub robins, various honeyeaters and parrots, as well as pardalotes, wrens, thornbills and whistlers. Also keep an eye out for the rare red tailed black cockatoo. The most delightful time to visit is from April to December when orchids are in flower. 

Kaniva has a great P-12 school, wonderful childcare and kinder programs and a large community sport participation. It offers a relaxed, safe and free place to raise a family.
