Happy Healthy Ageing Expo 2021

In late 2021, West Wimmera Health Service was delighted to host an online expo - the 'Happy Healthy Ageing Expo' to celebrate the importance of engaging in positive and empowered ageing.

Held over three days, across the months of October, November and December, the online event aimed to engage people in a wide variety of health topics that can impact their lives. Experienced allied health, nursing and other health professionals presented a program of three key topics: Get Checked, Live Healthy and Be Prepared.

The theme of the first day of the expo series, ‘Get Checked’, focused on finding things early and prevention. Keynote speaker Dr Sean MacDermott, shared his experience of finding cancer early. His message was clear – don’t leave your bowel screen kits from the Government sitting in a cupboard or drawer, use them and get checked early!

The event’s second theme ‘Live Healthy’ was about looking after yourself and being healthy as you get older. Keynote speaker, Mal Coutts, talked about mental health, looking after it and services available to help.

The final expo day focused on the theme ‘Be prepared’. Experienced health professionals gave a range of presentations that shared information about available services and topics covering ways people can feel empowered and positive about their health and wellbeing as they move into the next stage of life.

West Wimmera Health Service’s Executive Director of Community Health, Alex Hall, was delighted with the success of the first day of the expo. She shared, “It was wonderful to bring together the community and our health professionals in this new format. Technology plays a role in all aspects of our lives, and it has become a key tool to help us stay connected and informed.”

Alex continued, “To be able to deliver an event like this is more important now than ever. There is a vital need for us to be adaptive in how we engage with our clients and community members, and the ways we continue to empower people in their own health and wellbeing at every stage of life.”
