Acute care

Acute care refers to the care provided to people who are admitted to hospital.

People are admitted to our hospitals for a variety of reasons including:

  • Elective surgery

  • Medical conditions

  • Emergencies following accident or trauma

What we offer

Our Jeparit, Kaniva, Nhill and Rainbow hospitals offer acute care. Jeparit has 4 beds, Kaniva 6 beds, Nhill 35 beds and Rainbow 7 beds.

Our dedicated team of nurses provide care and treatment to patients under the medical guidance of doctors from Rural Doctors (Nhill and Kaniva) and Rahim Medical (Jeparit and Rainbow).

Food provided in our acute care settings is freshly prepared onsite, offering patients both nutritious and tasty options at meal times.

Where necessary, we collaborate with Ambulance Victoria to provide Non-Emergency Patient Transport (NEPT). NEPT is provided to patients who need clinical monitoring, care or supervision during transport, but do not require an emergency ambulance.

To qualify for NEPT services:

• the transport must be clinically necessary and,

• the patient must require active clinical monitoring, care or supervision during transports provided by either a paramedic, other registered health professional or qualified patient transport officer or attendant and,

• the transport must have been booked by an authorised health professional.

Further details on the eligibility criteria can be found on the Victorian Department of Health website.

How to access

People are admitted to our hospitals through our urgent care centres, referrals from GPs or specialist clinicians, or by other hospitals.
